The Ophthalmology Service provides ocular medical and surgical care for dogs and cats.

In addition to routine detailed eye exams the Service offers a variety of diagnostic tests including:

• applanation and rebound tonometry;
• gonioscopy;
• electroretinography; and
• ultrasonography.

We perform adnexal, intraocular and orbital surgeries including cataract surgery with artificial lens implants and laser treatment for glaucoma and retinal detachment.

We work closely with your referring veterinarian to provide the best possible diagnostic and intensive treatment plan for your pet.

What to Expect

Our Ophthalmology Service is overseen by a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, along with a veterinary technician dedicated to oversee the Ophthalmology service, who may be your first point of contact. The Ophthalmology Service is supported by all of the specialties in the Ontario Veterinary College Companion Animal Hospital (internal medicine, surgery, neurology, oncology, etc).

As we are a teaching hospital, students in their final year are assigned to patients on arrival and also play a major role in the management and care of our patients. These students provide an extra level commitment and care to your pet. The student assigned to your pet will be an excellent, consistent point of contact for you while your pet is a patient at the Companion Animal Hospital. They are always closely supervised by our senior clinicians and experienced technical staff.

When you first arrive you will be greeted by one of our senior student veterinarians, who will introduce themselves to you, take a full medical history and assess your pet. The veterinary ophthalmologist will join the appointment and oversee the care of your patient.

The veterinarian will discuss the findings and offer options for further care for your pet. All decisions about your pet’s medical treatment are made in collaboration with you and the veterinarian.

Clients can have the utmost confidence that our students and technicians practice to the highest professional standards and excel at the nursing care of patients, under the direct supervision of the veterinary ophthalmologist.
