Tony Mutsaers

Medical Oncology Team

Tony graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1997. Following a year of private practice in Newcastle Ontario he returned to OVC for a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a residency in Oncology at Purdue University . He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Oncology . After his residency Tony worked as a clinical instructor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He then returned to Canada to study biomarkers for targeted oncology drugs at the Sunnybrook Research Institute, culminating in a PhD from the University of Toronto. During his graduate studies he practiced part-time as a medical oncologist at OVC, and was an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Clinical Studies from 2007 - 2010. He then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia studying osteosarcoma. In 2011 Tony became an Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph with a joint appointment in the Departments of Clinical Studies and Biomedical Sciences.

Danielle Richardson

Medical Oncology Team

Danielle Richardson is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College. Following graduation from OVC in 2002, she spent three years in small animal practice in the Toronto area. She returned to OVC in 2005 to complete a rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. Danielle then completed a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine and achieved board certification in 2009. Danielle has been a Staff Internist at OVC since 2008 and spends her time on both the Medicine and Oncology Services.

Danielle was the recipient of the OVC Class of 68 Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009 and 2010. She was also awarded the Maureen Marinelli Award for Compassion and Outstanding Patient Care in2008.

Paul Woods

Medical Oncology Team

Paul Woods, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM Internal Medicine, Oncology is Professor of Internal Medicine and Oncology in the Department of Clinical Studies at the Ontario Veterinary College and co-Director of University of Guelph Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation ICCI. He received his veterinary degree from the Ontario Veterinary College and his Master of Science in Veterinary Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Woods completed a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Medical Oncology Fellowship at Colorado State University. He is dual Board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine ACVIM in Internal Medicine and in Oncology. Dr Woods' research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of translationally relevant spontaneously arising cancer in cats and dogs. He facilitates clinical trials both as a Primary Investigator PI and as co-investigator with other clinical researchers (e.g. National Institute of Health Comparative Oncology Trials Consortium NIHCOTC. He also clinically coordinates the Companion Animal Tumour Sample Bank (CATSB) which collects biologic specimen for future cancer research using companion animal cancers. Formerly, Dr. Woods was in private practice in Owen Sound, Ontario and was on the faculty at the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences at Oklahoma State University.

Steve Patten

Medical Oncology Team

Steve Patten is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario, followed by a graduate work in cancer biology at the University of Guelph, before entering the Ontario Veterinary College. Steve completed a rotating internship at OVC's Health Sciences Centre, followed by a Medical Oncology Internship at the Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer. He is completing a residency/DVSc in medical oncology at OVC.

Steve's MSc research was in the field of tumor angiogenesis and response to targeted therapy. As a DVM student and intern, he was involved with several research projects relating to animal cancer; specifically canine osteosarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and hemangiosarcoma and bettering our understanding of these diseases both from basic science and clinical perspectives.
