Diagnostic imaging is an integral part of the health care team for pets and performance animals. We provide state-of-the-art-imaging, highly trained technical staff, and a team of Board Certified Veterinary Radiologists. Board certification is a rigorous training and examination program that provides advanced training in image acquisition and interpretation. This makes us an integral part of the health care team and allows us to provide the best possible care for your animal.
Our radiologists are specially trained to interpret x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, and other specialized images of all species. Using the findings from these studies, we contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of your animal.
The following imaging modalities are all available in house:
- Digital radiography (digital x-rays)
- Ultrasonography
- Fluoroscopy (real-time x-ray)
- Computed tomography (CT scan)
- Nuclear Scintigraphy (eg. Bone scans)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Contrast procedures (eg. Barium studies)
In addition we provide a wide variety of image guided therapies including:
- Ultrasound guided tissue biopsy
- Ultrasound guided injections (joints, tendons, etc.)
- Tracheal and urethral stenting
- Image guided targeted chemotherapy and chemoembolization
What to Expect
Prior to any imaging tests, your animal will first be seen by the appropriate specialty service (internal medicine, surgery etc.). After completing the history and physical examination, in consultation with the radiologists a diagnostic imaging plan will be discussed with you. Each test has benefits, drawbacks, and costs that vary depending on the particular patient and disease process. We can assist in selecting the best test to reach a diagnosis for your pet.
Once the imaging plans are made, in order to facilitate the imaging tests with as little stress as possible, your animal will often be sedated. For some advanced imaging such as CT and MRI general anesthesia is required to ensure they remain still for the duration of the test. All of our imaging tests are performed by highly qualified technicians and by our veterinary students, with the supervision of a radiologist. All interventional procedures are performed by the radiologists and residents.
Most radiographic and ultrasound procedures will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. CT and MRI examinations take longer, up to 2 hours. We routinely provide service for 40-60 patients per day, therefore the imaging tests need to be scheduled. In some cases, this may involve a second visit to the hospital.
Once the imaging study is complete it will be reviewed by both our Diagnostic Imaging residents and a Board Certified Veterinary Radiologist. These results will be reported in writing, and together with the veterinarians caring for your animal we discuss the results. The clinician primarily responsible for your animal will convey those results to you and show you the images. However, if you would like further clarification on the findings the radiologist or resident would be happy to speak to you directly.
