To provide opportunities for RVTs to enhance and advance their knowledge and skills in the field of veterinary medicine thereby preparing them for lifelong learning, while promoting excellence in veterinary medicine.

The RVT Rotating Intern will observe the workflow and responsibilities of the HSC RVTs in various clinical service settings. The RVT Intern will gain nursing and clinical skills applicable to general Veterinary Medicine, as well as various service specific knowledge and skills. The RVT Intern will be under the direct supervision of the Supervisors, Patient Care and Service Delivery, and within each service, work very closely with service RVTs, Interns, Residents, Student Veterinarians and Faculty. Upon successful completion of required clinical rotations, evaluation and program requirements, the RVT Intern will be presented with a Certificate of Completion.

Graduate RVTs are often looking for opportunities to improve their knowledge and skillset. A rotating internship in the OVC HSC would allow RVTs the opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like to work in a variety of specialty services in large and small animal species. Interns will have both core (required) and elective weeks to choose from. Each rotation will have opportunities for both didactic and hands-on learning, and interns will be required to fulfill a skills list for each rotation with the guidance of our amazing RVTs and clinicians.

Rotations will be scheduled once interns are accepted to the program. There will be 40 weeks of Core Rotations and 10 additional weeks designated as Electives and chosen by the intern.

RVT Interns are expected to fully participate in each service.

RVTs would also be expected to attend service rounds, grand rounds and CE opportunities (such as Intern Lecture Series and any technician CE) throughout the year. Additional learning opportunities will be provided, such as RECOVER Rescuer CPR Training.

Interns will maintain a case log on each service and submit a brief reflection to the Supervisor following each rotation. A skills list provided on each rotation will have both mandatory and optional skills to practice.

A final project of the intern’s choosing (presentation, poster or written assignment) will be completed at the end of the internship.

RVTs will have ample opportunity to practice and become comfortable with various skills throughout the year. These skills are designed to build upon the core competencies completed during the VT diploma program. Completion of specific objectives relative to each rotation will be required. Objectives are designed to offer a complete and well-rounded experience, including mastery of select skills. Hours of work will vary depending on the service, and will include day, evening, night and/or weekend shifts as required. Schedules will be provided in advance.

Veterinary Technician Internship

Candidates are required to fill out a form to submit an application. The form will collect information about past education, past work experience, as well as a letter of interest. The applicant is asked to submit the names and contact details of the two professional references on the main application form, and written reference letters will be collected via a separate form link.

Timeline:

• Complete application is due by January 6, 2025
• Candidates will be notified by March 17, 2025, of the status of their application
• The internship will start on June 16, 2025, in line with the start date of the rotating veterinary interns
